Across the world of coffee, there is nowhere quite like Yemen. Qima Coffee was founded with a vision to connect some of the most remote producers in Yemen to the specialty coffee community. Kojafah
was grown at staggering altitudes that clim to 2300m. Across this incredible landscape, coffee plants grow slowly, developing truly unique flavour.

With innovative production methods and meticulous traceability, Qima has helped transform the lives of farmers who grow coffee in some of the most challenging conditions. Since its establishment, Qima has carried out extensive research to develop a better understanding of coffee varietals in Yemen. Alongside four key populations within Arabica, the Yemenia varietal is a newly discovered line, found exclusively in Yemen. The cup quality was found to be truly exceptional, with cup score that ranked amongst the highest in the world.

THE CUP

The signature characteristic of the Yemenia varietal is outstanding complexity, evolving with every sip. This naturally processed coffee is deeply flavoured with notes of ripe plum, apple, currant, rooibos, and spice. The lingering creamy sweetness is reminiscent of fine dark chocolate.

ABOUT THE FARM

Qima - meaning top in Arabic - was founded to shine a spotlight on the amazingheritage and production of coffee in Yemen. It’s founder, Faris Sheibani, is committed to offering farmers in Yemen a sustainable way to continuing farming their coffee, in the way it has been done for centuries. By increasing traceability and consistency, Qima helps the incredible coffees of Yemen coffee receive the attention they deserve in speciality markets. Whilst the coffee tree has its roots in Ethiopia, the coffee drink originated in Yemen. Up until the early 1700s, the country was the world’s sole exporter of coffee. Yemen has extreme desert plains, large coastlines, and vast volcanic mountain ranges. Due to its microclimatic and genetic diversity, and the centuries old cultivation techniques, Yemen’s cup profiles are as diverse as the flavour wheel.

Qima initially sourced coffee from just 30 farmers in one small community in Yemen. Through continued investment and as the profile of Yemeni coffee has grown, this has now expanded to over 2,600 farmers across 53 communities in Yemen’s coffee growing areas. The focus remains the creation of relationships where quality and an equitable trade relationship help empower coffee farmers at some of Yemen’s highest altitudes.

THE PROCESS

Qima selects cherries from farmers, carefully tracking individual lots. Within a few hours of harvest, they are transferred to the Qima facilities for processing. This coffee was naturally processed, with the whole cherry dried on traditional raised African beds for 15 to 25 days. The drying conditions are monitored closely to ensure consistency, producing flavour that is rich and complex.
