The Advent calendar turns the wait into a daily ritual. Its roots lie in Germany, where families began marking the days before Christmas long before calendars came with doors, chocolate or coffee.
Today, Advent calendars come in almost every form imaginable. But the simple pleasure behind them has hardly changed: anticipation, discovery and a little inspiration, one day at a time.
So how did 24 little doors become such a beloved part of December?
Where It All Began
The story of the Advent calendar begins in 19th-century Germany.
Long before printed calendars existed, families found their own ways to make the wait for Christmas visible. Some children made chalk marks on doors or walls. Other families lit candles or displayed religious images as Christmas approached.
The forms varied, but the idea was always similar: turning the wait into something you could see and experience. Each new mark meant Christmas was getting a little closer.
By the beginning of the 20th century, these private traditions began to develop into something more familiar.
German publisher Gerhard Lang is often credited as one of the pioneers of the printed Advent calendar. His early versions featured colourful illustrations before later designs introduced the little doors that would become one of its defining features.
A simple way of counting the days had become a Christmas tradition of its own.
Behind 24 Doors
What waited behind those doors changed over time.
Early calendars often revealed illustrations, poems or religious scenes. The pleasure was in opening the window itself and seeing what had been hidden from view.
Chocolate arrived later and transformed the calendar once again. For many of us, this is the version we remember from childhood: 24 small treats, each waiting behind its numbered door. Today, almost anything can be hidden behind them: tea, books, beauty products, toys, wine and, of course, coffee.
The contents have changed, but the idea remains beautifully simple: Something is waiting for you. But you have to wait until tomorrow to find out about it. The Advent calendar asks us not to open everything at once. Perhaps that is exactly why the ritual has endured.
December can move quickly. Opening one door each morning creates a small moment to stop and enjoy. And if coffee is already part of your morning ritual, it feels like a natural fit.
Our Take on the Tradition
At THE BARN, inspiration starts with the people who grow our coffees.
We work with producers who inspire us through their dedication to quality, their knowledge of their land and their ambition to keep pushing coffee forward. Their coffees are shaped by remarkable places, distinctive varieties and individual approaches to processing.
This is why we exclusively roast Single Origin Coffees. We never want to blend away the individual character of a farm or terroir. Instead, we want every coffee to retain its identity and every producer to have a voice.

Over 24 days, we introduce you to coffees, producers and origins that we closely work with. Some may already be familiar. Others might completely change what you expect coffee to taste like.

For our 2026 Inspiration Coffee Advent Calendar, we have curated 24 exceptional Single Origin Coffees from some of our closest producer partners. Together, they take you through 10 different coffee regions, exploring a broad range of varieties, terroirs and processing styles.
Washed coffees show us clarity and brightness. Naturals can bring ripe fruit and sweetness. Honey processing creates beautifully balanced profiles, while anaerobic fermentation can take flavour in completely unexpected directions.
You will encounter classic varieties such as Bourbon and Caturra alongside Pink Bourbon, Pacamara, Typica, Gesha and the famous SL28 and SL34 varieties of Kenya. The journey moves from Kenya to Guatemala, Ethiopia to El Salvador, Colombia to Costa Rica, with stops in Brazil, Rwanda, Indonesia and Honduras along the way.
Every coffee connects back to a producer. We would be nothing without the dedicated farmers who grow the coffees we roast. Many of the producers featured in the calendar are long-term partners whose harvests we follow year after year. We believe those relationships are fundamental to quality.
At THE BARN, we like to think of great coffee farms in the same way we think of vineyards: places with their own identity, terroir and approach to craftsmanship. The Advent Calendar gives us the opportunity to celebrate that work one farm and one cup at a time.

Behind each door, you will find 50 g of coffee enough for two or three brews. Try a coffee as V60 in the morning and return to it later. Change your grind. Compare recipes.
Every coffee in the calendar is roasted in our Omni Roast Style, so you can prepare it as filter or espresso. Our light roast is designed to preserve the unique flavours of each farm and terroir. As the coffee cools, those flavours begin to open up and change. Give it time.
This is also where the Coffee Diary comes in. Created especially for the calendar, it accompanies you through all 24 coffees. Record your brew recipe and tasting notes, then score each cup for smell, flavour, body, sweetness, acidity, balance and finish. There is no right answer. Taste is personal! We encourages you to slow down, pay attention and discover what is actually in your cup. By Christmas, you may know a little more about coffee and perhaps have met a new favourite farm, origin or variety along the way.
