El Guayabal is one of the Urena family´s plots along the mountain range of Chirripó, Brunca. Spring waters, environmentally friendly plant management, water-free processing, and dedicated sorting at their very own dry mill are what bring out the qualities of this coffee. This part of the farm land is named after the shade-providing Guava trees. This black honey processed coffee has notes of plum and maple syrup, supported by a big body. A well rounded and intensely sweet coffee, we are happy to have it back.
The work of Regulo Urenas and his eldest son, Ricardo, has led to a major change in quality in the Brunca region of Costa Rica. Previously known for mass-produced coffees, the Urenas started the first micro mill in the region back in 2005. Water sources are protected and any waste is used as organic fertiliser. Our coffee is a black honey, which is processed without the use of water. All mucilage is left on the beans after depulping, and as they dry, the sugars from the mucilage create a honey-like texture that sticks the resulting parchment together. This has to be moved and broken apart over a period of 10 days. The result - a concentration of natural sugars that creates a rich body and loads of flavour.
