La Bandera is located in the Tarrazu Valley, renowned across the world for producing some of the finest coffees in Costa Rica. The tropical climate, volcanic soil and high elevations all converge in the roots of the plant, lending great complexity to the fruit. This year we will feature two different lots from La Bandera, San Pedro and Juanico. Our Juanico lot is a clean honey demonstrating sweet notes of maple and pecan, finishing with a plush mouthfeel.

Before taking over from his father, Diego spent two years working in the United States, saving up to re-invest back into the family farm. That investment took the form of a Micro Mill, where the Red and Yellow Catuai that grows on the 20-hectares can now be processed on-site. Diego understands that careful control over processing is necessary for high scoring coffees. The natural and red honeys that he produces are still labour intensive – requiring regular movement and aeration over the 14-20 days of drying. Nevertheless, the result is absolutely worth it: beautifully developed flavours and a clean, lasting finish.
