Yirgacheffe is the prime coffee region in Ethiopia. Approaching the area by car is driving towards a natural reserve on the plateau of the highlands, surrounded by lush pristine forest. Yirgacheffe is very organised and it is obvious that the region benefited from premium coffee prices for decades. Halo is a village - the coffee, growing in this particular micro-region is very sweet with pronounced flavours of peach, orange blossom, jasmine and a citric finish.
On our quest to have more impact and to establish a personal relationship in Yirgacheffe, we visited washing stations in January 2020. Halo is a village in the Gedeo Zone of Gedeb - Yirgacheffe. The washing station was created in 2018 by Hailu Figa. The passionate producer, anxious to produce a delicate coffee, takes the time to select the most beautiful cherries and works with the locals to constantly improve quality. The coffee produced in the Yirgacheffe appellation, benefits from a rich natural environment, at an altitude of over 2000 meters above sea level, made of particularly fertile volcanic soils and a dense tree cover which ensures slow ripening of the cherries. This coffee also benefits from a vertical integration export by the Addissian company SNAP, which ensures full traceability of the Hailu Figa coffee.
Hailu Figa is from the city of Gedeb. For 12 years this dynamic man has been involved in the coffee sector with the primary ambition of offering high quality coffee on the market. He knows the value of the crops from his native region and the cup's characteristics of these coffees produced in fertile environments. Grown in the forest or in the garden, Halo's coffee shows a nice specificity in a cup. Hailu Figa works to reveal these qualities by bonding strong and long-term relationships with the peasants of Halo. He himself says that the strong links created with local communities are the most beautiful aspect of his work.
