THE BARN is now cash free

We decided to make all our operations completely cash free. While cafés in Berlin and Germany as a whole are often still working on a cash only basis, we felt strongly about being a leading example to promote a cash free business. Here is why:

SAFETY FIRST

By not having a drawer full of cash we make our cafés a lot safer for our staff and customers. There were several places in our neighbourhoods that were targeted by criminals, especially in winter when it is dark at closing time. Walking coins and cash to and from our bank was another moment of risk that we felt uncomfortable with. The safety of our staff is of utmost importance to us.

Convenience

We know how annoying it is to order that delicious coffee or grab a bag of beans - and then realise that you do not have enough cash. We take all cards and various electronic payments via your smartphone - easy. There is no minimum purchase amount either, and no extra costs!

Loyalty Cards

All our cafés hand out black gift cards. They can be loaded with credit for purchases, and they double as a loyalty card too. Using this card when buying your coffee, you collect a digital stamp – after eight coffees you’ll get one free. You can order and load one of these cards via our webshop, or ask our staff next time you visit.

Hygiene & Workflow

These points may sound minor, but we are big on hygiene and workflow. Touching coins and bills is not very hygienic - we find it a lot cleaner to handle a card from your wallet rather than cash that has been through many hands. Also, running out of coins and slowing down the purchasing process can slow down queues at our navigation points.

Clean Books

Needless to add, but for us the registration and full insurance of all our staff had been no question from day one of THE BARN. We pay at least minimum wage and insure all our staff fully. While that is not common practise in many cafés we felt that a cashless business also signals that we do everything 150% by the book and that we look after our employees.

International Community

THE BARN is a destination for an international coffee community that comes to Berlin to visit us. Card payments are another way of making their visits even more convenient and cost effective. No longer will you have to search for an ATM with expensive transaction fees - when all you wanted was a cup of our coffee or buy a bag of freshly roasted beans.

We are very much looking forward to your next visit - check out our locations page for more details.
