Jute (Hessian, or Burlap) is a stiff, durable thread spun from vegetable fibre that has become the industry standard way of packing coffee. Usually with a volume of 60kg, jute is an affordable option for exporters that is durable, easy to handle, and stack.

The problem with jute bags is that the open weave design can expose the raw material to flavour contaminants from dampness, odours and temperature. This is especially a problem during storage and transport, where changing environments and humidity can increase water activity in the bag. When the coffee takes on more moisture it starts to mould, and when it loses moisture it oxidises, causing undesirable flavours.
